On December 22, 2024, the waves at Waimea Bay on Oʻahu’s North Shore roared to life, signaling the start of the world’s most revered surf contest—the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. This prestigious event, named after the legendary Hawaiian waterman and lifeguard Eddie Aikau, once again enjoyed the support of Hawaiian Airlines, its official airline sponsor since 2019.

The competition, a highlight in the surfing calendar, entered its three-month waiting period on December 17, 2024. Conditions quickly aligned perfectly, a mere week later, thanks to the diligent monitoring of Pacific Ocean storms by event officials. They ensured that the swell strength, wind speed and direction, and tide levels were ideal for the competition to proceed.

Hawaiian Airlines, prepared even on short notice, played a pivotal role in the seamless execution of the event. The airline provided flight discounts and baggage waivers, assisting surfers in reaching the iconic surf break on time. The airline’s ground and in-flight teams enhanced the competitors’ experience through meticulous luggage handling, especially for their prized surfboards now included under Hawaiian’s standard baggage allowance, and ensuring a calm and comforting journey.

Landon McNamara, a local from the North Shore of Oʻahu, clinched the top spot, earning the Best Wave of the Day and walking away with a total of 600,000 HawaiianMiles, courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines.

Even outside the adrenaline-pumping surf season, Hawaiian Airlines continues its engagement with the community through the Eddie Aikau Foundation. The foundation runs an annual essay contest for Hawaiʻi’s students in grades 7-10, encouraging them to contemplate and write about Eddie’s enduring influence and legacy, further cementing the deep connection between the carrier, the sport of surfing, and the local culture.

The airline’s ongoing commitment not only to the sport but also to the values Eddie Aikau stood for, underscores Hawaiian Airlines’ role as more than just a sponsor, but a custodian of a rich local tradition that celebrates courage, honor, and the Hawaiian spirit.
